Looking forward to
face the future
How Maggengo Valtellina is preparing
to improve efficiency and tackle
with confidence the challenges of
tomorrow
For companies that serve the restaurant
world, the challenge of these years
of crisis, now that is showing some
tentative signs of a turnaround, is
summed up in one word: efficiency.
It is the theme of the reflection of the
family Gusmeroli, owner of Maggengo
Valtellina, which distributes fresh
produce to restaurants throughout
the valley and upper Como Lake from
the venue of Castione Andevenno in
Sondrio, and is now ready to kick off
a reorganization of the processes on
the side of supply and inventory by
investing primarily in information
systems.
“Until now we have been concentrated
on downstream processes, those
related to sales and customer service
- explains Marco Gusmeroli, second
generation with the two brothers
to support parents in the company
created by his father Antonio in 1972
- with good results as much as we
recently added a new official sales.
But now it is time to look forward and
we need to focus on weak aspects,
which could become real threats to our
work.”
The reference is to the transformation
of the market: in fact the restaurant
owner is no longer able to program
the volume of sales and orders, and
requires flexibility on the part of
suppliers and speed of response. Do
not forget that the Valtellina is an area
with less than 200,000 inhabitants
but, like all tourist areas records of
seasonal peaks, not always predictable,
partly because of weather variability
increasingly frequent in recent years.
“To ensure this we are acting on the
upstream processes, specifically the
management of orders to suppliers
and the reduction of warehouse
stocks - explains Marco Gusmeroli
-. In this way we believe to improve
customer service by monitoring
real-time product availability and
anticipating breakage of stock, thanks
to the encoding of references. But
the condition we aim is to try to
improve the interface between us, the
supplier and the customer, to respond
immediately to the satisfaction of the
latter.”
But there is another reason that
leads the current reorganization in
Maggengo. “The years of crisis that
we have gone through are leaving
aftermath in our industry: several
companies in our area disappeared,
others are in great difficulty. Add to
this the customers tend to concentrate
purchases from a few suppliers, it
is a categorical imperative for us to
introduce new references, widen the
offer not only fresh but also dried
and non-food and be prepared to
handle a growing number references
even at low rotation. And a rigorous
information system is crucial. For this
reason we use the operating system
recommended by CIC and provided by
the software company Ergon, already
widely experienced by other members
of the Cooperative. We do not know
how will be the market conditions in
the near future, but we need to be
equipped to be there and do well,
continuing a tradition of satisfaction
for our customers.”
