Can we talk about wines with an
alcohol content below 10 degrees? Just
ten years ago this would have seemed
heretical sentence. In a race to the
top, the international wine world
and taste of the average consumer
has gradually shifted toward higher
alcohol content labels, structured
wines with aging in wood to give the
unmistakable hallmark. Anyway, this
ride up alcohol was the result not
only of the change in the taste of the
wine drinker or production policies/
targeted marketing but also caused
by global warming, which affects the
wine-making in areas traditionally
suited raising the sugar content
grapes and increasing the speed of
aging, conditions that increase the
“heat” of the contents of the bottle.
In fact, this phenomenon has as
its counterpart a negative attitude
increasingly critical towards the
consumption of alcohol, which is
considered unhealthy, not in line with
a active lifestyle and sports, thwarted
in Italy from the tightening penalties
for driving with a blood alcohol level
greater than 0.5 g / liter.
Obvious that in a situation of this
type, manufacturers are running
for cover proposing bottles with
an alcohol content of around
10%. Bottles designed for summer
consumption, or for a young female
audience, or for occasional drinkers,
and after a couple of glasses can
start driving without incurring
penalties. But how do you get a low-
alcohol level wines? Raising yields,
anticipating the harvest or by using
mechanical separation. The result is
fresh wines, unless expressed, that
will definitely make the purists turn
up their noses, but they have great
potential, at least on the international
market. According to data from
the UK, in fact, the segment of low
alcohol wines in 2013 grew by 83%
and now accounts for 1% of the wine
market across the Channel. But,
according to analysts, this share is
expected to grow in a range between
3 and 10% in other countries, led by
Germany.
